Thinking About a Spring Detox? Don’t Forget Sleep!

Have you ever heard of spring cleaning?  It’s called spring cleaning because spring seems to be the ideal season to really deep clean your home from top to bottom, get organized and get rid of “stuff” you no longer need.

Recently more people have started applying this ritual to one’s body.  They use this time to expel the unnecessary and harmful substances in their bodies.

If you think about it, our bodies become slower and less efficient by our toxic environment and our constant stress levels.  We get pollution from the air we breathe, toxins/pesticides from the foods we eat, and chemicals from our water and the world around us. Most of us have higher than normal stress hormones because of the way many of us live and constantly on the move.

You may want to consider doing a a spring detox to get rid of all of the build-up from overindulgence, lack of sleep, and too much activity.  But, you can’t for get the important role of sleep in detoxing.  Sleep is what allows our bodies to repair and rebuild itself daily.

Do You Want to Try a Detox?

Detoxing often entails temporary abstinence from certain foods, which could include sugar, meat, dairy, caffeine, alcohol, etc. There are many variations and it’s up to you to determine which is best for your unique body and circumstances. But a thorough detox also requires broader lifestyle changes.

There are many variations of detoxing, but it commonly requires one to refrain from foods that contain things like caffeine, sugar, meat, dairy, alcohol, and so on.  You must decide which is best suited for your lifestyle.  And you have to realize that to get a truly detoxified body, you will have to make some significant changes in the way you live.

Here some suggestions of what changes to make:

  •  Less Screen Time: Turning off the television (and the computer and putting away your phone) allows your mind to relax and reduces stress levels.   Reducing stress levels allows your body and mind to be happy and healthy.
  •  Sleep more: You will need to make sure that in order to get rid of all the toxins and cleanse thoroughly, you must get a healthy amount of sleep. Plus, extra sleep can help to offset negative side-effects of withdrawal from certain foods or drinks, like caffeine.
  • exercise:  Make sure that you get up and get active enough get your blood pumping several times daily.  Doing so accelerates the detoxification process by moving the unwanted toxins out of your body. When you get more oxygen,you strengthen your heart and  become healthier.  Being to over zealous about exercise can be hard on a detoxing body, so take it easy.
