Many couples share a bed because it’s a way for them to feel connected. But while many couples live happily together, sharing a bed is a different store. On average, one in three Americans say their partner’s sleep style disrupts their own sleep quality. Before going straight to a “sleep divorce,” here are some tips that can help you and your partner peacefully share a bed.

Problem
Your partner kicks in their sleep, waking you up.

Solution
Get a bigger mattress! If you are sharing a full-sized mattress, each adult only gets as much room as a crib mattress. Ideally, couples should share a queen-sized mattress or bigger.

Problem
Your partner snores, which means you can’t fall asleep.

Solution
Snoring isn’t just annoying; it can be a part of a serious health issue. We recommend consulting with a physician first. If it’s not a health issue, here are some things to invest in: anti-snore pillows, nasal sprays or nasal strips designed to help people breathe more easily, or even an adjustable base. Adjustable bases can elevate your partner’s head to improve air flow.

Problem
Your partner tosses and turns, keeping you awake.

Solution
Look into a new mattress. Uncomfortable mattresses can lead to tossing and turning. So, you and your partner should take a good look at the comfort and support of your mattress.

Problem
Your partner loves to cuddle, but you like to have your space when you sleep.

Solution
Compromise. This is almost always the best solution! Before falling asleep, spend some time cuddling, but agree to sleep apart.

Problem
Your sleep schedule doesn’t match your partners.

Solution
Try finding a bedtime that would work for both of you. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to close your eyes and go to bed the second they do. If you like to stay up later, try reading a book with a personal lamp until you’re ready for bed. If you’re the opposite and an early riser, be considerate when you get up. Try to keep quiet and use minimal lighting until your partner wakes up.

Problem
You can’t agree on a temperature.

Solution
Ideally, your bedroom should be between 60 – 65 degrees Fahrenheit. If you one of you likes it warmer than the other, you can double-fold the blankets so there’s more coverage on one side.

Getting a good night’s sleep is important and, sometimes, sharing a bed just doesn’t work. If you and your partner just aren’t getting peaceful sleep when you share a bed, that’s okay! Almost one in four couples sleep in separate beds. However, no matter if you’re sharing a bed with your partner or not, you should still sleep on a good, quality mattress!
