Should You Swap Your Bedding When the Seasons Change?

As we move into a new season and the weather cools down, many of us instinctively reach for thicker blankets and warmer sheets. But have you ever stopped to wonder if you should be changing your bedding with the seasons for your sleep health, and not just because it feels cozy?

At The Mattress Hub, we’re all about optimizing your sleep environment. So, here’s the short answer: Swapping your bedding with the seasons can actually improve your sleep quality. Here’s why, and how to do it right.

Your body temperature plays a big role in how well you sleep. Bedding that keeps you too warm or too cold, no matter the season, can have negative effects on your rest. Bedding that isn’t season-appropriate may cause sweating during the summer and shivering fits during the winter—both of which interrupt deep, restful sleep.

It’s not just about comfort; it’s about better, healthier sleep. Swapping your bedding seasonally means that you’re helping your body adapt to:

  • Temperature changes
  • Humidity levels
  • Drafts

Here’s what to swap (and why):

1. Sheets

During the warmest months of the year, opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or bamboo. They wick away moisture and allow airflow. In the winter, we recommend switching to flannel or jersey knit sheets that will provide a soft, warm feel that’s perfect for chilly nights.

Our advice: Invest in two high-quality sheet sets, one for summer and one for winter, and rotate them as the seasons change.

2. Comforters & Duvets

During the hot summer months, choose a lightweight or all-season comforter to prevent overheating. A 100% cotton (with cotton fill) comforter or duvet is perfect. When cold weather hits, a down or down-alternative duvet with a higher fill power will offer the insulation you need.

Our advice: Consider using a duvet with interchangeable inserts for an easy seasonal switch.

3. Mattress Protectors & Pads

For summer, look for a cooling mattress protector made with moisture-wicking technology, and for winter, a quilted or wool mattress pad adds extra warmth and comfort. And don’t forget to check your mattress itself. If it’s trapping heat or lacking support, it might be time for an upgrade. (We know a place.)

Our advice: Rotate your mattress pad and protector seasonally just like your bedding, and use this as a chance to inspect your mattress for noticeable signs of wear.

4. Pillows

Some sleepers swap out their pillows for the season, especially those using cooling gel pillow technology during the summer or down-filled pillows during the winter. At the very least, change your pillow covers with the seasons to match your seasonal sheets.

Our advice: Replace your pillow every 1–2 years to ensure proper support. Don’t underestimate how much a fresh pillow can improve your sleep.

There’s something refreshing about changing your bedding with the seasons. New textures, colors, and even patterns can bring a sense of renewal that encourages better sleep. Your mattress is the foundation of great sleep, but your bedding is the finishing touch. At The Mattress Hub, we help you create a full sleep system that adapts with the seasons.
