Importance of a Good Morning Routine

Importance of a Morning Routine

We’re in the sleep business, so of course we talk about a good nighttime routine and how to make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary. However, starting your day off with a good morning routine will also help you sleep better at night. When you establish a regular routine after you wake up it can help increase your productivity, reduce stress, and give you a little more order in your life. While everyone has some sort of morning routine, especially if you have a house full of kids, it might not be productive. Here are some tips to kick our morning off on the right foot and give your day a more productive start.

  1. Don’t look at your phone first thing in the morning. Yes, this can be very difficult with the convenience of having email, chats, and text can make it difficult to leave your phone by the bed. Yes, your emails are important but give yourself time to wake up and plan your day before diving into your phone.
  2. Set some time aside for stretching or working out. You don’t need to jump out of bed at 3 a.m. to get to the gym for an hour. But, it will help you feel better if you start the day even with a little yoga, light stretching, or 10-15 minutes of cardio. This gets your blood flowing and helps you feel more awake.
  3. Start your day with happy music. Music is a great way to stimulate your brain, and if you play music that makes you feel good you’ll start the day feeling like you can take on the world.
  4. Make your bed. It gives you a sense of accomplishment when you complete a task, even if it’s something small, you’ve already completed something for the day. This can also help you build self-discipline over time.
  5. Drink water. While coffee might be the thing that gets you kicked into gear, your body hasn’t had any water for 8 hours (if you’re getting the right amount of sleep!) so you are naturally dehydrated in the mornings. Don’t skip the coffee, but start with water.
  6. Take a few minutes for yourself. This might be in the form of meditation, journaling, or reading a book or the morning paper. Whatever you do to prioritize yourself is what is important.
  7. Wake up at the same time every day. Yes, this can be difficult when it’s a day off or the weekend and you want a couple of extra hours, but it’s important to stay consistent with your morning routine even when you’re not working.
  8. Wake up early. We’ve all been there, you turn off your alarm and wake up 5 minutes before you have to rush out the door. If you wake up a couple of hours before you need to leave your house this can help you not feel rushed, and give you time for your morning routine

One thing that can help you have a good morning routine is getting a good night’s sleep. If you can’t go to sleep at the time you need to so you can wake up and tackle the day then you will have a tough time getting started in the morning. So your morning routine actually starts at night when your head hits the pillow.
