Choosing the Right Mattress for Your Bedroom
The time has come to say goodbye to your old mattress and hello to one that will give you the restorative and supportive sleep you deserve. So out with the old lumpy mattress that leaves you waking up with back pain and in with a bigger and better mattress. But what should you look for in a new mattress? Of course, you want one that fits within your budget. And you want one that is suitable for your sleep style. But what size of mattress is going to give you maximum comfort and support, without taking up too much space? Let’s take a look at standard mattress sizes and which one is best for your bedroom.
First, it’s important to know that the exact mattress sizes vary by manufacturer and model, so mattresses can have a +/- 2-inch variance. One of the first things you need to consider when you choose your size of mattress is how many people are sleeping in the bed. If you’re married with kids, do they sometimes join you? Have pets that keep you warm at night? You’ll want to make sure your mattress provides enough room for everyone to sleep comfortably. Bedroom size is also a factor when choosing if you’re going to have a smaller mattress or a larger one. If your bedroom is smaller, or you have a guest room that’s 10X10, you’ll want a smaller mattress compared to the larger master suites that can be 13X16. Now, let’s choose the mattress size best for you.
Twin Mattress– Measuring around 39”X75”, a twin mattress is the smallest traditional bed out there. This mattress is perfect for single sleepers like a child’s room, or an adult with a smaller space like a studio apartment. This will fit even a smaller 10X10 bedroom and still leave room for other furniture.
Twin XL Mattress– These measure around 39”X80”. This is longer than the traditional twin mattress, these are typically used in college dorm rooms and are great for taller teens or rooms with limited space. Two of these mattresses can also be put together for a split king adjustable base for full body adjustability.
Full Mattress- If you’re a recent grad looking for your first mattress, a full-size mattress (or double) is a great starter mattress. It measures 54”X75”. This is also a great size mattress for couples who enjoy snuggling, as long as kids or pets won’t share the bed too. This is commonly used in guest rooms and is best for bedrooms 10X11 or larger.
Queen Mattress- This is by far the most popular size of mattress. It is 60”X80” and is typically used in master bedrooms. For couples, it offers extra room to move around and is a great choice if smaller children or fur babies are enjoying a good night’s sleep as well. While this will fit in a bedroom that’s 10X10, a larger room such as 12X12 will also leave plenty of room for other furniture and still leave floor space.
King Mattress- The perfect size bed if you’re a couple that shares the bed with multiple kids, or a large pet like a Great Dane. This bed is 76”X80” and leaves plenty of room for both sleepers to spread out and take up a little extra room. You definitely need a room at least 12X12 for a king bed.
California King- This is the longest standard-size mattress there is. Coming in at 72”X84”, this bed is great for individuals over six feet tall. You’ll want to choose this mattress if you have multiple people and pets sharing the bed, or if you want to have a lot of extra wiggle room when you sleep. You just need to make sure your bedroom size is at least 12X12, but if you want floor space and room for your dressers, headboard, floorboard, nightstands, and other furniture, having a bedroom 13X16 would probably be best.
You don’t want to feel claustrophobic in your room, so make sure when you choose your mattress you think about and measure where the bed will be and how much space that will leave for your other furniture. Your bedroom is your sleep sanctuary and you want to be comfortable. If you have a smaller room but want to have a full or queen-size bed, you can come up with creative storage options to help optimize your space.
