How Many Hours of Sleep Do We Need?

It might surprise some of you to learn that Cheap Sheep gets almost 11.5 hours of sleep every night. That calculates to almost HALF a day in bed. That might sound like a lot (and it is), but our little lamb honestly needs that much sleep to feel truly rested in the morning. This doesn’t mean everyone in dreamland needs the same amount sleep every night. Some sleepers only need 5 to 7 hours, while others need 8 or more hours to wake up truly refreshed.

Sleep experts have found that a person’s age determines how many hours of sleep they need each night.

There is a huge difference between getting the amount of sleep you want, and the hours of sleep you need. Not enough sleep can damage our creativity, memory, reflexes, and our ability to focus. Thankfully the National Sleep Foundation teamed up with some other smart organizations to determine the recommended hours of sleep for each age group.

◾Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours
◾Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours
◾Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours
◾Preschoolers (3-5): 10-13 hours
◾School-Age Children (6-13): 9-11 hours
◾Teenagers (14-17): 8-10 hours
◾Young Adults (18-25): 7-9 hours
◾Adults (26-64): 7-9 hours
◾Older Adults (65+): 7-8 hours

To find out exactly how much sleep you need, choose the midpoint hourly range of your age group. Monitor how you feel in the morning and throughout the rest of the day. If you feel groggy and sleepy, then increase your schedule to the highest recommended hour for your age group. If you are at the top of your age group’s sleep range and are still waking up feeling groggy, then you might need to change your sleeping habits. Sleepers need to turn off all screens before bedtime, and cut back on exercise and caffeine late in the day. You might also need the help of a new luxury mattress.
